Lightening the Load

Unlike many retail businesses, I can't just ring up a supplier or wholesaler and ask for more stock to be delivered to my little shop. It takes me a lot of time to go out looking for pretty things to fill the shelves that strike just the right note...

So now and then its a lovely surprise when I find that a friend has been collecting lots of gorgeous items for me, that she knows are just perfect, and that I would be interested in buying...

I had been saying to a friend the other day that I would really love to get to the stage where I don't have to go out every weekend trying to source goods, which would mean I could take some time off occasionally. To have a stash of back-up stock at home would make this possible...

This does now seem to be becoming a reality, as yesterday evening I was able to buy this whole collection of pretty pink rose printed china.

I'm thrilled to bits with it all and can filter it into the shop as-and-when a space needs to be filled. Perfect!

And then today, in came a visitor to my shop with this gorgeous 1950's satin gown. It actually belonged to the same lady who I bought another 50's dress from (and have since sold), which I mentioned towards the end of this post.

It has a few surface marks, but the cut and shape is just gorgeous.

I've brought it home this evening to give it a light press. I then wanted to photograph it, but due to its small size, have had to place it on my original Edwardian mannequin
- She with the 24" waist!

Her bust is a little large, but hopefully it gives you an idea of the fabulous 50's silhouette, complete with hooped underskirt and stiffened interlining!
The gown will be back in the shop tomorrow.
Enjoy your evening!

  1. That dress is beautiful and I love the colour - shame its not in my size as it would have been perfect for a friend's wedding later on in the year.
