Behind Bars

I'd saved this pretty gift wrap from one of my Birthday gifts last year (tell me I'm not the only one who does this! ;-))
Yesterday I finally put it to use...
I started by painting the inside of this little vintage finch cage, which needed a freshen up with some pure white paint.
That's better.
I then spent several minutes cutting out some of the pretty little birds and butterflies from the gift wrap.
I glued these in place inside the cage.
Then a touch of glass glitter...mostly on the wooden perches and on some of the bird's wings.

Some vintage millinery flowers were twisted through the cage bars to decorate the outside...
Along with a decorative swing tag which gives a clue as to what will be living inside my cage!

Can you see her?
It's the fairy that I made myself a few years ago!

It
is OK to keep fairies in a cage isn't it?! ;-))
I thought I might use it on my stalls to display the next batch of fairies that I make for the fairs in April...As long as it doesn't result in me being reported to the RSPCF - The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Fairies!

Have a great day,
Niki x

  1. No, you're not! I can remember my mother always kept Christmas paper, then ironed it to use the next year!! The transformation to the birdcage is charming.

  3. I'm sure if you open the cage regularly so Fairy can flutter about I sure you will be OK.
    It is very pretty.

  4. I am loving the redo of this. As for the bars, I'd always leave the gate open for her!

  6. No, you aren't the only one, I keep pretty paper but haven't put it to such creative use as you have. Love the cage and the fairy, hope you let her out occasionally though just so she can stretch her wings.

  7. Yep, me too ~ I can't bear to throw away lovely wrapping paper ~ the same goes for ribbons too...

Only you could transform the plain cage into something of such beauty. Can't wait to see the fairies!

  8. Fairies can slip right through the bars, so you are not being cruel... they'll stay if they want to.
    Hugs!
P.S. I save the papers that I like... makes nice backgrounds for cards.

  11. What a nice way to recycle wrapping paper...you have given me many ideas on what can be done to recycle pretty paper. Your fairies are so charming...of course you want to keep them in safe keeping.

  12. I always keep pretty paper, you never know what it can be used for, it's a habit passed down from my Mum and has been passed onto my daughters.
    I adore the cage.

  13. I too keep special wrapping papers! For a long time I even covered my old crockery book each year with it! (The book finally fell apart!)
But NO, NO, faeries should never be caged! Perhaps a lovely birdie instead?
    Blessings,
