As a continuation to the Valentine's theme, I wanted to share with you an item that I purchased several years ago. It is a silver satin fabric, heart shaped box, made completely by hand many decades ago. On lifting the lid, I found a hand embroidered message lovingly stitched inside with pale blue silk.
Many happy returns of the day
Love -
Odette & Baby
I wonder what Odette had placed inside for the lucky Margo to enjoy.
It rests on my dressing table now, where I store a 1920's wedding camisole and wax flower garland.
**Sigh** I do so love treasures from the past....
Wouldnt it be great if all these old things could speak and tell us their stories.
ReplyDeleteYou have so many lovely and interesting things.
Penny.
More lovely things Niki! Isn't it a treat when you find something with obvious history. It always makes me want to find out more! Sue x

ReplyDeleteHi Niki, what a beautiful box and wonderful embroidery - this must have been a very special gift for them to spend the time and care on the embroidered message. Clare x

ReplyDeleteThat's a real heart box to be treasured forever! Oh, I would as well be interested in that patchwork blanket where it was laying on when you took the photo!
ReplyDeleteAnd a wax flower garland???? Oh, please, could you show it to us in the near future?
By the way, I got a third Valentine's surprise parcel yesterday, and it contained... a lovley heart garland!!!! I will be on my blog soon, I did not yet take photos.
Consider me in love with your box (and the contents) too! Thanks for brightening my day!!

A sweet message from the past. These things give us visual pleasure and food for thought.
ReplyDeleteI found a photo of my Dad from the 40's, my mother had taken it to the maternity home with her when I was born and had journalled her stay on the back of it.
I can't tell you how moving a find that was.
Hugs
xx

ReplyDeleteThe Decorated House
Hi Niki, i am trying to find a house with a small commercial element, so i can trade in a low key way. I want to hold lots of charitable fund raising events, coffee mornings with raffles, and selling my cushions and bags etc....It's all i have ever known really, i have had a shop for 23 years selling antiques and architectural stuff! so now i want to raise funds and awareness for a charity that will buy musical and audio equiptment for children less able, to have at home in their own bedrooms, so when i am up and running i will let you know, i am hoping Suffolk will work out.......x
ReplyDeleteThat's really beautiful. How facinating too. I love finding messages like that and wondering about the people that wrote them or received them. I'm sure they would never imagine that the box would still be so treasured now in 2007!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful thing, and it is fun to know the story behind. It gives it a more value i think. Treasures with a history.
ReplyDeleteHave a nice weekend, Aina :)
How lovely, oh the stories those things could tell. I wonder who Odette and Margo were, sisters prehaps, cousins or maybe best friends.
ReplyDeleteOh how sweet! Things like these make me long for "olden day's", where a lady would sit by the fire and ever so patiently embroider messages as such!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the beautiful romantical pictures. All wonderful things. I love them all.
ReplyDeleteMy you are so gifted in finding such unusual and wonderful treasures. The heart is amazing, and wouldn't it be exciting if it could tell you its history. Your use of it is lovely.
