Snowy Shepton

Understandably, custom to my shop was a little thin on the ground today, so I took the opportunity to change some of the stock around and to move in a new (old!) item of furniture. I also escaped for a couple of minutes to take a few photos of Shepton in the snow...

Since the filming and showing of the BBC's Turn Back Time; the High Street, there has been renewed pride in the town...

A campaign has been set up to try to raise the estimated £89,000 it will take to repair the historic Market Cross...

More details can be found here.

Also, there have been new businesses set up since the filming, including an old fashioned style sweet shop, an art gallery and a new restaurant called Goodfellows.
A large premise on the Market Place sold at auction recently too!
Not to mention the opening of Woo Hoo! of course, which I wrote about on a previous post.
Dolland & Aitchison's opticians has been taken over by Boots, and so is in the process of having a new facade, as is the shop next door to it, which has been given a more traditional look. (This was the shop that was used for the Sergison's grocery shop in the show.)

What I think would be the icing on the cake, is if someone were to take on the 60's style Milk Bar and run it as such. Most of the scenery and props are still in place - It would make a fabulous tourist attraction, as well as giving the younger generation somewhere to meet up and socialise. People always seem to spend on food and drink, even in recession...so it could be a great little business for someone willing to take a risk.

Tomorrow the Christmas lights will be officially switched-on by Shepton's carnival queen.

I shall be open late, along with lots of the other shops, and there will be market stalls, a hog roast, and various entertainment.
I noticed more TV interest in the town again today, with this outside broadcast team on location on the Market Place...And BBC's Radio Somerset will be there all day tomorrow again...Hopefully all good news for Shepton's regeneration.

Thanks for stopping by....

  5. I too have enjoyed the programme. It is fantastic to hear the effect that the programme has had on your High Street - long may it continue. If only I lived closer I would love to open a milk bar...

  8. Good news about the new interest in Shepton. I haven't been your way for a while, not going very far this week, snowed in yesterday (paying a price for living in the country:), but hope to pop in before Christmas. Best wishes:))

  9. I'm so pleased to read that the empty shops are starting to fill up - Shepton is an attractive town & with a boost could be vibrant again. Perhaps the BBC needs to visit & film in other neglected towns too!

    Your photos are very pretty!

  10. What a charming market place! Sadly most small town market places are setting empty in our country due to big box stores that have as much charm as wart on the end witches noise! But anyway, your little town is so charming, I'm glad people are interested in bringing it back to its original grandeur! Have a wonderful weekend!
