I'm sure that the making of this series had quite a profound effect on all of the families involved in its making, but especially on the younger members. I'd just like to sum up with the wise words of young Michael (the butcher’s son) which were said in the final minutes of tonight’s programme; "I have basically learned that for the high street to work, we have to want it to - It’s up to customers, not traders as to what happens there...if there are no customers, there will be no traders."
For me this has been a wonderful series to watch, not just because it was filmed out on Shepton's Market Place, or that I am new to trading on the high street again, but it has made me realise how precious the customers are that come through my door...It was shocking to hear that the big supermarkets take 98% of the grocery trade in this country...so perhaps we should start to fight back before we lose the uniqueness that is to be found with independent traders...there is room for us all...

  1. Can't believe the supermarket figures.Well,I can really.I live in a small market town and we always try and support local shops. We may see something in a branch elsewhere but come back and buy it here.I think the phrase "use it or lose it" sums it up.Have spotted your shop on numerous occasions on the programme and shout out there is nikki's shop.

  2. Really enjoyed this series and kept thinking about your lovely shop. I really enjoyed visiting in September but sadly we didn't spot another shop we wanted to visit on the High Street! As the success of the '60's milk bar showed what you really need is a decent coffee shop. An opportunity for somebody..? Good luck for your continued trading!

  3. Dear Niki
Tonight's show was wonderful it really captured the essence of the 1970's. My mum had that white shawl and the stripey sofa in one of the houses my gran had when she moved into a flat after my grandad died - the exact same one!
Oh, the days I spent in record shops - buying CD's or itunes is not the same. Seeing the front cover of the Pink Floyd LP "Dark Side of the Moon" and Eages' "Hotel California" - pure nostalgia.
Roll back the good old days.

  4. Loved the series! I must admit the '70's one took me back a bit!
Especially the power cuts....putting on make up by candle light, going to a disco where they had a generator for the power, going into the loo and looking in the mirror to discover blue eyeshadow on one eye, green on the other! A quick smudging of both colours and I had matching eyes LOL! Happy days!
Thanks for the 'Insider' shots of the series too.

  5. They certainly were wise words from that young man! Loved the episode last night. I spotted a gold lurex dress of mine in the shop... and the back of your head at the party???

  6. Lovely (nostalgic) photos! I was talking to Ben about this series today and he was pleased to hear I've pre-ordered the DVD! Of course you're not far from his parents, so he was aware that they'd been watching.

Your excellent quotation at the end has also reminded me to put a visit to our local market down in my diary - I want to go and order local produce for Christmas.

  7. Great programme as you say there is room for all kinds of shops. I live in a small village and our next village has a lovely little high street, they even have a shop like Arkwright's on Open All Hours, we try to shop there when we can it's lovely to buy and take time to have a chat with the shopkeepers.

  8. I have absolutely loved reading about this on your blog and seeing it unfold on the television. It is a sharp reminder of how important community is and how the high street has so radically changed over the years. Maybe people will think twice about buying from their local 'corner shop' now and bringing back a sense of belonging to our high streets. I sincerely hope so.

  9. Just found you blog via BusyLizzie.

Love your photos - have been an avid watcher of this series - think it should serve as a warning to all shoppers - use it or lose it.
