You may have read in a previous post that I was looking to 'grannyfy' my laundry room. (Lois and I are in agreement that this really needs to become an official 'style-word'!) I have had this c1940's Sanderson daisy print fabric for a long time and have wanted to use it somewhere. Our laundry room seemed the ideal place, as I can make it as girly and grannyfied as I like, because for some strange reason, I am the only one who really uses this room...funny that! ;-))
It was once our tiny kitchen, and despite being dual aspect, always felt claustrophobic. In our previous house, the back door came off the kitchen, and I had become used to this. I loved opening up the door whenever possible and preparing the evening meals with the sunshine and a breeze wafting in. This kitchen, with being built on the corner, always felt cut-off from the rest of the house, so it was a great relief when we were able to create a new one on the other side of the house, in the room that was once my shop.
Anyway, getting back to the lovely fabric...I've made some little dress curtains and pelmets for the two windows. I had just enough to complete this project from the one old curtain that I had.
So I used another vintage Sanderson cotton in similar jewel-like colours, to line the back of the chicken wire panels in what were once the fitted kitchen cupboards. As well as a small curtain under the old worktop to create extra storage.

I painted the cupboards a lovely aqua colour a few years ago, added the chickenwire, and gave them new glass knobs.
The storage is very useful in here, as this room tends to be used a bit as a dumping ground, particularly for cardboard boxes which I save and recycle for posting out parcels for my website.
Niki, your blog background is so beautiful...i love the coloring, it looks so sweet...hands down, that is THE most gorgeous laundry room i have ever seen...it must be a pleasure to do your wash surrounded by all of your lovely things...
ReplyDeleteOooh Niki..I had one of those Sanderson fabrics in our cottage before we moved here. It's the fabric behind your chicken wire cupboards.I believe the fabric is called 'Salad Days'.I have some tiny remnants left over and you've now inspired me to do something with them!
ReplyDeleteLove the other fabrics too! ;-)
I can only dream of transforming our basement laundry room into something so beautiful.
ReplyDeleteHello Niki, washing and ironing would be bliss in your new granny room...'Kirsty' eat your heart out - watch and learn girl!. Julie x
ReplyDeleteFunny that you should be the only person using that room... However, it is completely gorgeous now, I would not allow anyone else in there if I were you!
ReplyDeleteI think I could move into your laundry room!
ReplyDeleteHi Niki
ReplyDeleteWhat a grannylicious transformation! If I can ever find the walls of our laundry room (a bit like the sitting room carpet) then maybe some tongue & groove would help it on its way to becoming a nicer place to be!
Sue xx
The room really looks great, and I also wanted you to know that your last post was a real treat - for some reason it wouldn't come up when I tried it on Sunday, but it was well worth waiting for...
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful room, Niki! I could definitely use some grannifying in my house! =)

well, I won't offer to come and do your laundry, but I'll happily sit and chat with a cuppa in your laundry room! It's beautiful! All those roses are stunning. A good job to make life's dull chores just that little bit less annoying! I love it! t.x
ReplyDeleteWhen I used to sell stuff on ebay I used to call it 'granny chic' in my listings! It seemed to go down very well too.
ReplyDeleteLove the fabric...I just love your laundry room...I wish I had a laundry room to decorate...I just love those pictures of the roses..They're just BEAUTIFUL!!!!!Always enjoy reading your blog..

What a great new word for the English language. "I grannyfy, you grannyfy, they grannyfy,!) Great stuff, SueX
ReplyDeleteHi Niki - have been following your blog for some time, didn't know you were coming to the B&W. I had a lovely day there. You weren't by any chance the stall-holder who had a 1930's patchwork quilt? I came back for it but the stall-holder had packed up. What a co-incidence if you were!
ReplyDeleteLove the blog!
Nice job Niki, makes the drudgery of laundry a bit more cheerful! xo, suzy
ReplyDeleteNiki, I want a laundry room exactly like yours! I particularly love the drying rack that is hid away on the photos. I need to "think" about doing something to brighten mine up...sharon
ReplyDeleteCan I come and do my laundry in your laundry room?;)
ReplyDeleteJulie xxxxx
Hi Elaine, Thanks for visiting my blog and for your comment. No, I didn't have a 30's patchwork quilt for sale...but I'm sorry to have missed it! Sounds like we could have snapped-up a treasure there!
