A Spring to Remember

Clear blue skies, 20 degrees, bursting buds and frothing greenery....I NEEDED to be outside this morning...
I'm sure a few of you blogging ladies in other countries must be fed up with reading on many of the UK blogs, about the gorgeous spring that we have been experiencing this year. So, forewarned, I'm here to enthuse on my blog too! After two years in a row with no real sign of the four seasons, we are relishing whats been happening...a proper winter with deep snow falls and now a spring with mild temperatures and plants doing what comes naturally...
It really is a feelgood tonic and the best therapy to be outside at the moment taking it all in and keeping on top of the weeding and general care of the plants.
So much to do, but with rewards such as these dainty cowslip flowers, who is to argue?

Certainly not Miss Millie! She and her sisters are very happy ladies...

Bulbous clematis buds fit to explode...
Alongside the the wisteria branches that are so over-laden this year; I wait with bated breath for their spectacular performance. I planted this one at the base of our raised decking, so the fragrant flowers are at eye level on the upper balcony, right outside our back door.

Gardening with free range hens wandering where they please, is extra work, but I think what they give back to the soil(!) is a bonus, and most plants tolerate being walked on to a certain extent.
I'll leave you with a few photos of our front garden (a chicken-free zone), which is lush and untrampled...but needs weeding....so I better get back to it...

  1. A girl of my own heart! you are!!

Love your little chicken house and garden next to it - and yes, I agree, it's a challenge with chickens in the flower beds, but they sure are fun!!

  3. This is absolutely lovely, Niki, and no amount of other 'springtime' posts can spoil the pleasure of seeing another! I do like your 'dress' for the climbing plants. The photo of forget-me-nots is so lovely - would you possibly let me copy it onto my own blog, please? I have a collection of my favourite 'blues', and that is one of them! Let me know if not, though. Thanks very much for coming over to my blog and leaving such a kind comment - I am still basking in the pleasure of that great Vide Greniers.

  5. It all looks wonderful Niki. I wanted to do some gardening this afternoon, but the energy levels are fairly low after the manic events of the week!

  8. It is a fantastic spring this year isn't it with such lovely weather. I took a photo on Sunday of a church and the beautiful trees that surround it. When I got home I discovered I taken the same photo exactly a year ago and yet not a blossom in sight!

  9. ooh nikki I have been drinking in your photos of your beautiful flowers. We have a similar garden except that parrots have been eating all our wisteria buds before they could pop. Yes we are heading into winter here but will come back to find reminders of warmer weather!

  10. We are having a beautiful spring here in southern Indiana too. My daffodils have lasted for weeks and are now just starting to fade. Now the crabapples, azaleas, pink flowering almond, poppies, and irises are just about to pop. Love all your lovely pictures. It's nice to know there is beauty all over the world if we just look.

Oh, I love your cowslips! Do they grow wild in your garden, or did you plants seeds/bulbs? I would love to grow cowslips, but have not found anywhere that sells the seeds or bulbs with which to grow them.

Take Care, Im going in my garden now to plant the lavender and roses.

    Love Melanie. xx

  15. Hi Melanie,
    Thank you for your comment.
I planted some small cowslip plug plants a few years ago, but now they are big clumps that have spread and seeded themselves - very easy to grow!

    Happy Gardening!

  16. It was lovely to walk through your spring garden and I must say I also love your grannified laundry. I must make some curtains for mine. The curtains from my old laundry have gone into the bathroom in this house. They were made from vintage material found at a thrift store. So I might look through my stash and see what would look nice in this laundry which has a regular window , plus one in the door too.
