Less is More?

I found this little cupboard a few weeks ago in my friend's junk shop. (Her prices are very reasonable, so its always fatal going to have a look!) I had decided to make a few adjustments to my kitchen revamp that I had done back in August and felt that this would fit in well.

Thankfully, the outside of the glazed cupboard had already been given a nice coat of pale green paint, which looked fine against some of the other accessories in the kitchen.
I wasn't keen on the dark interior though, so gave that a coat of off-white emulsion, and the little door knobs too. You may also have noticed that it is now upside down! I liked the shaped base, but wanted to place it on top of an existing cupboard, so thought this would add a pretty detail along the top instead.

Once it was painted I found it wasn't very practical for all of my glassware, so I had to wait for poor hubby to feel better after a nasty bug, before he could add a simple little shelf inside for me.
This was then painted to match and I added a vintage French muslin frill along the edge.
Well....I arranged all of my glassware inside, but somehow it seemed to be lacking.
I've often tried the 'less is more' approach; and I've seen the word 'simplify' banded about and thought I really must be more focused, but I guess I'm just not the de-cluttered type.
....So I added.....and added....heehee...
lots of pink rosy china and mis-matched cups.....

I can't help it - I'm just an old fashioned girl at heart. I love how this reminds me of little English tea shops in traditional towns and villages; where tea is served with a strainer and slices of cake arrive on floral china plates with starched napkins and silver cutlery.
Hope you all have a lovely weekend,
Niki x

  1. Niki,
That's very creative of you to turn the little cabinet over. I like the scroll detail at the top. It looks great with all the pretty pink china in it. I love a pink and green color combo.

  5. LOL! That 'Simplify' sign I always see...makes me laugh...because buying it to display makes things a little more cluttery in itself!
You did the right thing Niki! (You always do :)

  15. Now THAT was a very crafty idea to turn the cabinet upside down. I don't know if I'd have ever thought of that myself. Turned out wonderfully nice. Gives me inspiration now for the next time I go into a store.

Your little cupboard is just gorgeous!!! I keep seeing that "less is more thing", and it really looks good for some people...I'm just not one of them. Why do we collect all of these treasures if not to look at them? Follow what you love.

  18. Hi Niki

I'm so glad I left that cupboard for you!! It looks great with your makeover and unique touches.

I'm longing for the day I can manage organised clutter rather than the total disorganisation that is my home!
